St Hilda’s School Trip to Filey :-)

… this is the boy who DID NOT want a donkey ride…

We have just got back from a really cool day out with school.  It was a slightly earlier than usual start with us arriving at school at 8am as opposed to just before the bell goes at 8:50am 🙂  We all boarded two buses (Foundation and Reception in one and Forms 1 and 2 in the other) and set off for Filey.

We found out pretty early into the journey that not only was the AC not functioning in the coach, but the toilet was also in-operable 🙁  We had 25 under 6 year olds, so the latter was somewhat a showstopper.  We stopped the other side of York for a toilet break, so Simon thought it was the ideal opportunity to grab coffee and bacon butties.  Sadly 10 minutes after ordering said butties it was clear that they were not going to be ready in the next 5 and we were already being waited for…. So armed with coffee but no butties we got back on board.

We managed almost 30 minutes on the beach at the South beach before the tide came right in, allowing us time to walk back up to the park by the golf course, have lunch, a donkey ride (above) and play on the park toys / climbing frames etc.

Then we all took the short walk down the ravine and then around the promenade to the amusement park area by cobble landing.  The kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves along the way and then were rewarded with bouncy castled, roundabouts and a whole heap of other rides before enjoying an ice-cream in the sunshine.

Amazingly the sun stayed out pretty much the whole time we were there (impressive given the rain that we have seen this last few days) and just a little rain appeared as we boarded the coaches up on the Filey Brigg (by the caravan park).

We swapped coaches for the return journey leaving the poor souls in Forms 1 and 2 to deal with the lack of AC and functioning toilet.  A good job ref the toilet as it was very well used by the children once we had travelled the first hour on the journey home.  Everyone was worn out with quite a few ‘sleepers’ on the coach, setting us all up for a fabulously relaxing weekend…

St Hilda’s Summer Celebration

Today was the day for the Summer Celebration Service in the St Hilda’s Chapel for the foundation, reception and forms 1 and 2 children.  It started at 14:00 and lasted approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.  It was kind of like a Bradford Grammar School Speech Day, with the children singing some wonderful songs and then receiving their awards from their teachers.

Mrs Grunwell was the host and she delivered a wonderful event that we are so very pleased that we were able to be a part of.  Mr Boyer also delivered a heartfelt delivery of thanks to the teachers, teaching assistants and the rest of the staff at St Hilda’s – one employee (Lynn) has worked at St Hilda’s for over 30 years !!!

Also in attendance (and having delivered her own speech) was the Silcoates Head Girl who has just completed her A-Levels (now ready to take on Newcastle University for a Dentistry degree) and who started her Silcoates career within St Hilda’s some 14 years ago.

All the children offered what they will always remember about St Hilda’s – all of which were heartfelt and personal, but some were just hilarious – such as when the Police came to talk to the class, feeling like they were going to be arrested or offering undying love for Mrs Forge 🙂  Elliot remembered playing with LEGO with his friends 🙂

Tomorrow is the school Filey trip so we are hoping and praying for sunshine 🙂

Ben’s Birthday Cake

Vicky has been at it again whipping up the following cake for Ben’s 5th birthday party on Saturday.

It took two days to build up and these photos don’t do it justice 🙁

An awesome cake that was very well received by Ben – he was super pleased with the bearded dragon 🙂

St Hilda’s Sports Day

As advertised yesterday, it rained and it rained HARD. There was no way that the children would be getting outside for the races. So, the events were all held in the school gym, with coffee and scones etc in the school dinner hall. There were also lots of small games and a to bola in the dining hall as well.

Form two performed a really good maypole dance (seemed slightly strange to be doing this in June) to initiate proceedings. Then the various classes ran their races etc.

Reception had a running race and a egg and spoon race (but with a swing ball racquet / bat and bean bag) where Elliot was in a great place for a win with the egg and spoon race – sadly Taran-Veer dropped his racquet in front of Elly, causing Elly to have a significant fail :-(.

Olly did not want to join his nursery class mates today so he just sat out and watched the events unfold.

We have a big weekend ahead of us with Ben’s birthday party tomorrow in the Warrington area, then Grandma Cuckoo’s overnight (the kids). We (mummy and daddy) have a 21st birthday party on Saturday night, followed by an Aston Martin Owners Club meeting on Sunday for lunch and then a 5th birthday party on Sunday afternoon.

Last Reception Assembly ever at St Hilda’s today…

Sadly, this morning was the very last ever Reception assembly at St Hilda’s. The class performed a really nice piece for the school on dinosaurs. They all told us key snippets of information about when the dinosaurs roamed the land, how long ago they became extinct (and what that meant). The class had all painted their own dinosaurs (Elliot’s was a Stegosaurus) and they finished up singing a dinosaur song, and acting it out.

It was very well put together and the class clearly had fun doing it. 🙂

Oliver’s class also came in to watch the show – incredibly Olly sat through the show and watched intently – wish he could sit still for such a log time like that for us at home 🙂

Poor Elliot was poorly this morning but was absolutely NOT going to stay away from school for e last ever assembly.

It is school Sports Day tomorrow – perfect given that the gorgeous sunshine of the beginning of the week has been replaced with heavy rain…. 🙁 think we will need a brolly or two…
