RV Trip – Day 8 – Paso Robles to Morgan Hill

The RV park in Paso Robles was definitely the nicest of all the parks that we stayed at (including tonight’s stay in Morgan Hill – but only just) however it was not the best.  The best was the very first night at Big Sur, as Big Sur RV campsite was all with nature – i.e. we parked in the trees with a large stream running behind the RV – then awakening to the forest smell etc – simply magical.

We left the park this morning in glorious sunshine and mummy and Uncle Tim went for a tour of the Eberle Winery (just outside the RV park) and they ended up buying a couple of bottles (hopefully for tonight 🙂 ) of red.

Three hours later and a whole LOT of rain we arrived here at the Coyote Valley RV Park in the rain and began the big empty out and pack up of our gear in readiness for the flight tomorrow.

So, tomorrow we will be waking realtively early and getting out to Hertz to collect a minivan where we will transfer the bags and all into.  Then we will be taking the RV back to FamilyRV and hoping to get some of our deposit back 🙂

If time permits we will call in on the Folks and then head out to the airport ready for the United flight out of San Francisco International airport at 7:25pm.  We will land in London’s Heathrow airport at approximately 2:30pm UK time and then get a rental car to drive back to sunny Yorkshire.

The RV trip has been a lot of fun although we are happy that it is coming to an end as the signal for the end of our Californian Adventure has now come.  We are now looking forward to getting back into ForkHall UK, getting Elliot into a suitable school and beginning life again 🙂

Thanks for the memories United States, it has been a whole heap of fun.

RV Trip – Day 7 – Anaheim to Paso Robles

The day was miserable right from the off- rain, rain and more rain 🙁  (we think that this is an introduction to how we are to expect the weather when we get back to the UK – even Elliot commented on it today – he said “mummy, it is cold with no sun out” and then when Vicky pointed out that this was what the weather is like in England he just said “well then, I am going to be cold in England” 🙂 )

So, we chose to head to the Block at Orange shopping centre to buy some clothes for Elliot to travel home in and to spend some time at Dave and Busters.  We spent about 3 hours in total (including lunch) in Dave and Busters and had a pretty good time – the boys loved it, Oliver (as always) ran wild and Elliot enjoyed the driving games as well as the coin pushing games (such as found in British electronic arcades).

The journey to Paso Robles was approximate 260 miles and the first part of the drive took ages – the rain in conjunction with rush hour made for a nightmare.  However, once we got out of the LA districts the roads opened up and the journey became much easier.  Route 5 through the mountains was a really impressive road reaching 4144 feet above sea level at its highest point, and the drop back down into the valley below (on the North side) was  a significant drop – something like a 6 or 7% decline.  It was certainly enough (on both sides) for your ears to pop through the difference in air pressure.

We finally arrived in Paso Robles just after 8pm to the Wine Country RV Resort which (at this time of night) feels like the nicest of all the parks that we have stayed at.  I guess we will know more in the morning when we get daylight.

Sausages, beans and chips for dinner – yay !! extra bonus – the sausages were cooked on a disposable BBQ 🙂  All the RV parks have had picnic tables and BBQ pits in each of the pitches – just a cool additional feature.

We also cracked open the cigar that Tim and Simon bought in vegas.  Not so sure we will follow up with a second run, but at least we can all say that we have “enjoyed” a cigar now 🙂

We have also begun clearing out the crap (clothes, toys etc) that we will NOT be taking back to the UK tonight – we have had to do this at night as Elliot and Oliver would not be in agreement with some of the stuff that is being turfed 🙂

We are considering a wine tasting visit for Vicky and Timmy tomorrow on the way up to Morgan Hill (only a 150 mile journey so will only take 3 hours or so). Simon looking forward to being able to smell but not taste….

Finally, RIP Steve Jobs – the Rust household only started using your gear later on, but we are now almost entirely an Apple household – thanks for the goods.

RV Trip – Day 6 – San Diego to Anaheim and Disneyland

Today was the first miserable day  in fact it rained 🙁 So we took our time getting up and out, had proper British bacon butties for Breakfast and then made our way towards Anaheim.  Vicky had already ascertained that there was NO Haloween show in Disneyland today, so we were on for spending some time in Downtown Disney.

En-route we tried to get to a beach at La Jolla only we found that we could not get close enough with the RV and the fact that it was raining also did not help much.  As a result we drove through the town and then got back on Interstate 5 heading North for LA.  We arrive in Anaheim just after 1pm, filled up another $180 of petrol and setup the RV at the Anaheim Resort RV Park.  We then got some tickets for the shuttle ($14 return for all of us) and head into the Disney area. We arrived just before 3pm and decided to head into the California Adventure park since there would be approximately 5 hours before the park closed.

We managed to fit quite a lot in before the boys got too tired…. Monsters inc, Bugs land, Toy Story Mania, Ariel the Mermaid and Tim and mummy got a couple of rounds in at the Tower of Terror :-).  Sadly, because of the work going on to finish Cars Land, the ice cream shop that daddy was in search of for a hot caramel ice cream, has been closed down as they are re-building that area completely.  Thankfully there was no queue at the caramel popcorn stand so we rapidly purchased goods and consumed half the bag before getting the bus back to the RV park.

Sadly, it is likely to rain again tomorrow so we are likely to just head back up to Paso Robles.

RV Trip – Day 5 – Sea World in San Diego

Today is the only day that we do not have a big travel piece involved as we are staying in the same RV park as we did last night – Mission Bay RV Park.

The main event for today was Sea World (http://seaworldparks.com/seaworld-sandiego)

It was all of about 3 miles from the RV park so mega short commute today 🙂

We managed to get in for Clyde and Seamore’s Spooky Adventure (Sealions and Otters) first thing, then onto The Shamu Show: One Ocean straight afterwards.  The Shamu show was very good and despite being right in the middle of the splash zone, we seemed to manage to avoid getting wet.

Blue Horizons show (Dolphins) was really good as there was a show put on with the majority of it being human swimmers etc and also included other animals such as birds.

We finished the day off with a visit to Chili’s (after having found a HSBC to put the cheque in the bank from the security deposit from the white house – driving a 34 ft RV through the main streets of the city of San Diego was fun….) and then picked up some Krispy Creme doughnuts for desert :-).

Olly has been a  little monkey nearly all day – screaming and carrying on if he was NOT doing what he wanted.  If we let him run around without a care, then all was good.  Oh my, we are going to have fun with the littlest Rust boy….

RV Trip – Day 4 – Ocean Side to Legoland to San Diego

Up early and out to Legoland 🙂  Took all of 15 minutes to get there – possibly the shortest journey in the RV.

Oliver lost his temper with us right at the start since he could see “legoland” but we weren’t getting out of the RV to go in.  He seemed oblivious to the fact that we actually needed to go and park the RV BEFORE we could go in.  It took 10 minutes or so to cool down once we actually got parked.  And then we got this picture of the two of them…. you would not believe the kickoff that took place only minutes earlier…

So here we have it, the entrance…

We had breakfast and lunch in the park and the boys actually preferred playing with some large rubber Lego blocks that floated – hence we played with them in a soft play area but also for some time in the water park section to the park.  Here is is pic of Elliot breaking out of the tomb that uncle Tim and daddy made around him…

We really need some of those blocks for the garden – they would provide HOURS of fun guaranteed.

The rest of Legoland was filled with all sorts of rides and such, but the best bit for the adults was most likely the area where various scenes from StarWars has been realised with lego blocks and also where monuments and town based scenes from the US have been built.  For example there is an area which is a replica of Las Vegas – see below for an example…

That is MGM Grand with Paris, the Venetian and the Stratusphere in the background – I assure you, these are all made from ordinary lego blocks – incredible.  There are a ton more images in the RV Day 4 gallery.

Once we finished in legoland, we head to the next RV park – Mission Bay RV Park – in San Diego.  We arrived at 5pm and already they had closed so we needed to use the security guy to get in.  We have a great place that overlooks Mission Bay.

Tomorrow, we are planning to head out to Sea World so will get plenty of pictures and maybe some video.

We are now totally used to the RV and can set it up in 15 mins and prep it for departure in under 10.  If only these bad boys were available in the UK, I think we would seriously consider one for weekends away – it really is a home from home…
