The doubt settles in

It’s been a few weeks since our meeting with Bonnie, Paula has had the opportunity to come into class and observe Elliot.  So a meeting is set up at school to discuss what Paula observed when she spent the afternoon in class with Elliot.  We had a long meeting discussing what he is like at home versus how he is a school.  Although we have never had any trouble getting Elliot to go to school when he is there he is very quiet and really doesn’t  join in with his peers.  He has been in school since September and should have started to bond with some of the children in his class.  Unfortunately Elliot stands at the edge of where the children are playing and is very interested in what they are doing but is completely unable to join in.  At times he will head to where the other children are playing and play at the side of them but never with them.  All of these things were noted by Paula also and she also asked lots of questions about his Speech and Language.  As he is very reserved at school he rarely speaks and when he does it is very quietly and can be quite mumbled.  Paula deduced that the main issues affecting Elliot are Social Pragmatics and a speech and language delay also .  As Elliot is so vocal at home and Simon and I really don’t struggle to understand him we thought this was nonsense but whole heartedly agreed that he has social issues.  This in mind Paula gave us a few ideas of next steps and what would be best to help Elliot.  She suggested we try out a Purposeful Play Group where children are directed in a play environment and learn how to play together.  An other option would be to contact our school district and insist on a assessment for him.  As we are looking at moving soon we decided to hold off on that idea but would maybe re visit later.

Armed with these thoughts the Autism idea is rearing it’s ugly head again but as Bonnie seemed so sure that he wasn’t I tried to ignore the thoughts.  That was until by complete chance I was introduced to a lady who wanted to know more about Mulberry as she was considering sending her little boy to the school.  She was concerned to know about the school as her son had recently been diagnosed with Aspergers.  We had a long talk about her son and the pennies started to drop it was as if she was talking about Elliot.

So with lots of information from the conversation I decided to start doing my own research.  I know it is dangerous to self diagnose on the internet  but the niggling doubts I had for so long about Elliot all seemed to be coming out.  “aspergers” all I can say is OMG how come we hadn’t considered this before.  Now that we are thinking Aspergers it’s time to start considering our options with all the fabulous resources available in Silicon Valley.

Although all thoughts are turning to Autism we still need to consider our options for school for Elliot next year.  It seems our options are pretty limited.  Due to his performance on the test he had before Christmas it is unlikely he would get into a Junior Kindergarten or Kindergarten programme at Mulberry so we would be restricted to redoing the 4 day programme again.  As we have plans to go back England in 2012 this is just not a viable option for us as Elliot would be so far behind his peers, this coupled with his social issues would make acclimating to school in the UK really tough.  Armed with this determination, to increase his options I decided that I would start doing additional work with Elliot at home and we would do the assessment for JK and K and see how he gets on.

Snow fun in New York

Simon was supposed to be in New York from Wednesday night for two days.  The snow in New York (3 feet in 6 hours!!) was causing flights into and out of New York airports to be cancelled.  Simon’s flight was the last on of the day from San Francisco (10:35pm) and 5 flights of the day had already been cancelled.  However the 1:15pm flight did manage to get away by 9:35pm… so things were looking good.  Simon was waiting for the flight (which was by now 45 minutes late) and was due to board at 11pm, at which point the announcement came over the tannoy – Flight 34 to New York’s JFK has been cancelled….

So, Simon did not get to New York.  Elliot was pleased to see Daddy the following evening – a surprise since Elliot was not expecting to see Daddy until the weekend.

The weather has changed significantly towards the end of the week, with the sun having gone inside for a while and the temperature has dropped significantly since Wednesday.

School feedback…

Today, we went in to Elliot’s school to find out their feedback on how  he is getting along.

We came back not really knowing what to think – is he doing well, is he doing less well – it is all a little unclear.

It seems that he excels in some aspects of their analysis (counting, eye to hand co-ordination) and yet has quite the opposite in others – such as copying shapes with a pencil and his social skills.

It is strange as there are also areas such as if he is showing signs of being a leader – really – he is four years old… Leadership skills…… really… ??

One thing is for sure, we have not spent enough time with him learning his alphabet and doing things such as collecting 9 cars together.

Funny, we knew he needs more work on his social skills but I think we are still feeling totally unsure of the importance of the rest.  At 4 years old, surely he should be focusing on making friends and building up the social skills that he will use for the rest of his life… ???

Stressed Saturday evening

We went out on Saturday with the folks and had a great day out at the Happy Hollow Park in San Jose.

Then on the way home, Elliot “NEEDED” some Fruity Pebbles breakfast cereal.  So as Vicky got out of the car at Safeway near the house, somehow her purse fell to the floor outside of the car as she got out, but she didn’t notice.  Then of course found that her purse was missing (her new monogrammed LV item that she got from the boys for Christmas 🙁 ) when trying to pay for said Fruity Pebbles.  Nobody had handed it in, nor seen it….. So we left our number just in case and went home to cancel the cards.

Stress kicked in as we realized driving licenses, Costco cards, Doctor cards and all our debit and credit cards as well as all manner of other important items were in said purse.

Amy and Jason came around for tea, and kindly brought some flowers to help brighten Vicky’s spirits.

Today, Vicky printed some reward posters to pop in the Safeway store on the off chance that someone had indeed picked it up and kept to give back to the owner at a later date.  Incredibly the customer services people had a phone message from a lady who had indeed picked up the purse and had kept hold of it for fear of it going missing once she had left it in Safeway’s “safe” custody.

So, we arranged to pick it up today and indeed it was safe and in one piece with nothing missing at all – Vicky has had s VERY lucky day today.  The lady had tried calling all the telephone numbers on the back of all the cards in an attempt to figure out where to find the owner. The people of Los Gatos are simply incredible people – honesty is in the job description 🙂

We then took Elliot and Olly for their first bike ride on their own bikes. See the photo attached….

We have enjoyed 2 wonderful days in great sunshine and temperatures that would be great for a UK summer day – 21 degrees Celcius – just awesome 🙂

More bikes…

We took Elliot to the shop tonight and bought him his first BIKE 🙂 He selected a cheeky little 16″ (wheels) Lightning McQueen beast.

Olly has not been left out, as he has acquired a little trike so that they can both go out learning to ride (pedal) together.

The weather has stayed good for another day – broke 20 Celcius again today – yay! It is looking good for the weekend – double yay !!
